It is a disease that has become more important in recent years, and we should distinguish between snoring and apnea. Snoring is defined as noisy breathing during sleep, while apnea is the cessation of breathing for at least 10 seconds during sleep. Contrary to what is thought, apnea is a very serious condition and is the first cause of sudden death during sleep and is a condition that must be resolved. Many systemic disorders are also seen in the patient with apnea. Endocrine, neurological, urological and psychological problems, especially heart and blood pressure diseases, may accompany apnea. The inability to concentrate during the day, the feeling of tiredness and constant sleepiness are the results of apnea. Relatives of patients who apply with these complaints usually state that the patient’s breathing stops for a long time during sleep. In these patients, after a good ENT examination, the height-to-weight ratio should be checked. The number of apneas is higher in patients with a high body mass index. The next examination is called polysomnography, a test to be performed during sleep. According to the results of this test, the patient is diagnosed with simple snoring, mild, moderate or severe apnea and the treatment option is determined. While surgery gives results in patients with simple snoring or mild apnea, a device called CPAP should be used in patients with severe apnea.
