Vocal Cord Diseases

Humans can speak through two vocal cords called vocal cords. In the presence of any condition affecting this region, a change in voice may occur. Hoarseness or any change in voice is always a condition to be considered. This is especially important for smokers. A preliminary diagnosis can be made by observing the condition of the vocal cords with an endoscopic examination. This can be a simple cyst, polyp or nodule, or it can be a sign of a tumor. In such a case, surgery may be an option. In patients with suspected tumor, further surgery can be performed by making a diagnosis with a biopsy from the vocal cords. If it is a polyp, nodule or cyst, these can be removed by an intraoral surgery under the microscope, and the patient can regain his normal voice. Another cause of hoarseness can be vocal cord paralysis. In these patients, unilateral or bilateral vocal cords can be observed as immobile in endoscopic examination. When this situation is detected, firstly the reason for its occurrence should be tried to be revealed and then surgery to correct the voice should be considered.
